Land of Lakes Adventure – July 24-27, 2023
Time for a history lesson: did you know the town of La Crosse was named after the French game lacrosse? As the story is told, in 1805 when Lt. Zebulon Pike was exploring the formerly French territory acquired by the US in the Louisiana Purchase, he came across a beautiful prairie on the edge of the Mississippi river where natives were playing the game of lacrosse. And so he named the area Prairie La Crosse.
We didn't know about this interesting bit of history, and we are excited to learn more along this Land of Lakes Adventure in Wisconsin. Our journey will take us along twisty backroads that follow streams and tributary rivers which feed the mighty Mississippi. A mix of agricultural views that earned this part of the country the moniker of the "bread basket" of the US, along with picturesque quaint little towns, as well as 4000 and 5000 foot elevation changes as we get up into the hill country. We'll explore the Driftless Region of Wisconsin, an ecological anomaly known for its jagged and rugged terrain with many cliffs and rock outcroppings, dramatic bluffs, lush forests, and steep gorges. Enjoy the variety of venues with the contrast of the nearby prairie lands and lake country also incorporated into our journey. And don't forget the cheese. There will definitely be cheese.
